Product

Fluid-Screen provides a flexible platform to detect and identify bacteria in a variety of fluids.  The reusable handheld reader works with a sterile disposable chip to provide information on bacterial contamination in 30 minutes with >99% accuracy.

The sterile chip incorporates microfluidics, microelectronics, and microbiology to separate bacteria from fluids and to find their identity.

Fluid-Screen is based on a patented silicon-based biosensor technology developed in the Yale University School of Engineering and Applied Science in Reedlab.  The core product has two small, portable components:

  • Sample Chip – a disposable module with a built-in filtration system and biosensor. 

  • Reader – a reusable, hand-held electronic processor that identifies the presence, specific type and condition of bacteria in the sample. The reader sends data via Bluetooth/WiFi to either a desktop or mobile device

At present these data may be stored and analyzed with standard business software such as an Excel spreadsheet.  In follow-on product development Fluid-Screen will create a customized suite of software tools to make analysis and reporting even simpler.

Science

Fluid-Screen uses a two-part process first to concentrate bacteria from a fluid sample and then to detect them directly.  The filter unit concentrates bacteria, and the sensor unit identifies them.  Both of these units together make up the sterile disposable Fluid-Screen chip.

Sample concentration

Dielectrophoresis is a force that works on uncharged particles to manipulate their motion in an electric field.  We have tuned our field to specifically attract bacteria to an electrode.  When this happens, we get a concentrated bacterial sample on the filter unit.  Next, we change the electric field to repel the bacteria from the electrode all at once so they can be transferred to the sensor unit.

Bacterial detection

The sensor unit uses electrical information to detect bacteria directly. Different bacteria have different dielectric "fingerprints" which we can use to destinguish them. The result is a report of both the number and type of bacteria present in the sample.

The process of sample concentration and bacterial detection together take only minutes to complete.
